BP development decision wait „„ By Gabrielle Stuart A GROUP of residents who banded together to fight the expansion of the Edgeware BP will have to wait to find out who won. BP has bought two sections next to the service station on the corner of Edgeware Rd and Cranford St, and plans to build a bigger forecourt and shop there.
But residents say it will dominate their neighbourhood, and destroy the character of the area. A hearing was held on Friday where both sides put their arguments. Commissioner David Mountfort has reserved his decision. It is likely to be announced within the next three weeks. Only two residents who lived
directly next to the site, Kazu Kano and Mary Botting, were allowed to present their views at the hearing. A number of people from the area attended the hearing, and they presented a petition against the expansion signed by 37 residents. Mr Kano said it had been very difficult for residents to fight, because they were going up against
a big company which could afford to hire a lot of lawyers and expert witnesses. He believed the expansion was not needed, because over two weeks he had visited the site twice a day and had only seen a queue to use pumps once. But Cranford St is expected to get busier once the Northern Arterial motorway extension is built.
Under the city council’s district plan, the expansion should not be allowed because the properties BP wants to build on are zoned residential. But the city council has recommended the redevelopment should be allowed so long as it sticks to strict rules around things like delivery times and landscaping of the site.

Petition aims to fix intersection
In Brief REPAIRS START The Mona Vale Fernery in Fendalton, which was damaged in the earthquakes, is being repaired and strengthened. The city council has engaged contractor Dominion Construction Ltd to fix the damage to the building and strengthen it. The work should be completed by the end of October. The exotic and native ferns will not be impacted by the work, which is mainly happening on the exterior of the building.

Fashion By Andrew King A PETITION to take immediate action over a Harewood intersection has been started by a community board deputy chairman. The Breens, Gardiners and Harewood Rds intersection has been a serious concern for residents and parents whose children need to cross it to get to school. Shirley-Papanui Community Board deputy chairman Aaron Keown has started a petition to force the city council to make changes to the intersection. “It’s dangerous and needs to change,” he said. He started to deliver them on Tuesday, beginning with nearby businesses with workers who use the intersection. “I will definitely be handing it out around both Breens Intermediate and Casebrook Intermediate whose students use the intersection,” he said. Valentino’s Hair Design owner Adem Ferkatovich was one of the first to receive the petition and said everyone who
had looked at it, signed it. “We have about 30 signatures already,” he said. He agreed the intersection needed to be looked at. “It has been a problem for many years now,” he said. It is the second intersection near Breens Intermediate to come under fire from residents. Bishopdale residents have asked the city council to build a pedestrian island in the middle of busy Farrington Ave, near where it intersects with Wairakei Rd, to assist students to get through the traffic. The city council has said there are no plans to make further safety changes to either intersections – but has agreed to listen to community concerns.

ROAD CLOSURE A temporary road closure will be in place along Dover St while work is underway to repair sections of an earthquake-damaged wastewater pipe. The closure will be temporary between Radnor St and 36 Dover St. It’s expected to take up to one week to finish and started yesterday.

Davidson says speed review disappointing Fashion By Andrew King A REVIEW of speed limits in Christchurch has not included a reduction around schools which has been labelled “disappointing” by a community board chairman. Four roads in the north-west have been recommended for lower speed limits after a review by city council traffic staff and suggestions from the ShirleyPapanui Community Board. Certain sections of Blakes, Belfast, Greywacke and Highsted Rds will have lower speed limits imposed from October 31, if the recommendations from the board are approved by the city council. But board chairman Mike Davidson (above) said he was disappointed the board’s request to lower speeds from 50km/h to 30km/h around schools was not adopted as part of the review. “We think it is something that should have been seriously considered,” he said. City council traffic operations
Gardening manager Steffan Thomas said the submission has not been rejected, it requires further analysis. He said staff will have to determine which school frontages that have alternative or more appropriate traffic management options such as traffic signals requiring motorists to stop, rather than slow down, or vertical traffic calming devices which create operating speeds much lower than a speed zone already. Also they will have to assess the impact of the new speed management guideline just released by New Zealand Transport Agency on speed limits in general and

City’s many trees begin life at Harewood Nursery CHRISTCHURCH is well known for its parks filled with established trees. Many of these huge specimens started their lives as seedlings in a city council-run nursery in Harewood. The Harewood Nursery grows thousands of shrubs, trees and other plants used in city parks, street landscaping, and the regeneration of native bush on the Port Hills and wetland areas. It was established in 1978 and for the past 38 years a small team of staff have been quietly collecting seeds, propagating cuttings, and nursing trees into the mature specimens. The nursery is not open to the public, but it houses a selection of plants stretching over 11ha including native grasses, astelias, magnolias, heritage fruit trees, upright oaks, red oaks, pin oaks, hornbeams, field maples and turkish tree hazels. “We grow what the city council’s landscapers want us to grow basically, and we try and keep up with it,” nursery supervisor Joe Cartman said. Your Local Views Pokémon stop or go? This week’s opinion piece is written by Ilam resident and charity founder Kelly Dugan. He writes about a strange new phenomenon sweeping the nation and captivating children in his area The other night at around 10, I went outside my house to investigate noises. Nothing too unusual. I live on a main road but the difference was the voices were from children, unusual at that time of night. I stood at the end of my driveway and saw around 15 people loitering with their phones held up like periscopes so I looked up (maybe a UFO was flying over?) It was a UFO but a soon to be identified unidentified flying object, it seems there was a Pokémon on my street. A UPO perhaps. I have heard of the Pokémon craze taking hold of adults and children alike, the concerns of safety due to people running onto roads, falling into ditches and running into power poles. I waited and none of these hazards occurred. All I witnessed were kids out with their parents.
They were still attached it their phones but this was different, they were off the couch, they were outdoors and they were moving around chasing some elusive computer-generated UPO. Sure it was late; these kids should be in bed, but then I remembered when I was young (in the 70s and 80s), when being out at night was an adventure and exciting. With all the negativity in this craze, there is a good side – children and their parents out together in the fresh air having fun and having something in common. If you run into a lamp post or into traffic, you are an idiot with or without the UPOs. Do you have swarms of kids chasing pocket monsters around your neighbourhood? Spate of blazes keeps firefighters busy
By Mark Thomas – Fire Risk Management Officer THERE HAVE been a number of quite serious fires in the city this week. And this column is being written, hurriedly, before I head off to one of them. The deliberate fire set in the empty building on Hereford St last Friday was another example of our firefighters being put in danger by the reckless and criminal actions of some idiot. The fire was on an upper floor and the only way to get to it was from inside. This meant climbing stairwells with charged fire hoses in a building with structural safety issues that was already compromised by earthquake damage even before the fire damage occurred. In this case, the fire crews did a brilliant job in restricting the fire to the floor of origin. It’s just that they should never have had to. Last Saturday, we had an incident where a young woman was burnt trying to encourage a fire in a drum at a property in Hoon Hay that was dying down by

SCHOOLS TO THE STARS: A number of Elmwood Normal School pupils were lucky enough to get a chance to board the world’s biggest aircraft-based observatory, SOFIA. The aircraft-based observatory was operating from the National Science Foundation’s United States Antarctic Program facility at Christchurch Airport. The airborne platform puts the observatory above 99 per cent of Earth’s infrared-blocking water vapor, and enables it to conduct observations from almost anywhere in the world. When flying from New Zealand, astronomers on board SOFIA can study celestial objects that are best observed from southern latitudes, such as star formation within the Magellanic Clouds.

Rangi Ruru Girls’ School students recently competed in The Brain Bee Challenge at the University of Otago. It is a competition for high school students to learn about the brain and its functions, neuroscience research, careers in neuroscience and to dispel misconceptions about neurological and mental illnesses. At the recent South Island finals the school’s team enjoyed a day filled with activities, the highlight being a laboratory class to carry out experiments on
nerve stimulation. They also performed well in the rounds of live questioning and made the final of the team competition, falling short of making the top three. School head of chemistry Dr Hilary Stubbs said the students participated in a laboratory class which involved carrying out experiments on themselves on nerve stimulation which was probably “the highlight of the day”. “Our team made the final of the team competition which was pretty good,” she said.

SPORTS READY: Breens Intermediate celebrated the opening of its new sports turf in style on Friday. The turf is a long awaited replacement for the damaged court area now occupied by Bishopdale Community Pre-School. It has been a joint project by the Ministry of Education and the board of trustees, assisted by the parent support group. It features equipment and markings for hockey, basketball, netball and tennis. Principal Nikki Clarke said they were delighted to be able to open the new turf. “It will provide many opportunities for our students to get active and enjoy fitness, physical education and sport.”

Out Of Hand Ben Reid’s primary interest for his printmaking is NZ’s environment and the impact of humans on our precious land. His work often depicts tales of loss of habitat, extinction of species and introduced and exotic predators. The print work produced in 2016 is a continuation of themes of NZ’s preservation. Narratives within each work consider isolation, regret, time passing, acknowledgement of our history, where we live and what NZ is, and what it means to us, also about hope and optimism, and accepting and learning from our mistakes, past and present. As told by Warren Feeney, “Reid’s delicate, elegantly structured and at times gently humorous prints are here to remind us of what is at stake: the unselfconscious grace and beauty of New Zealand’s indigenous birds and the way they enrich our world”. Marahau wood carving artist Tim Wraight describes works for this exhibition come from 2 streams. “Firstly there are 2 carved cubes of Totara wood in which I explore the laying of pattern onto a strong form, with a whimsical approach combining dancing figures and a quite formal pattern. The other group of works; old hand tools refashioned for ‘ritual’ purposes, with new carved handles and decorations of feathers, fibre and found objects, give reference and reverence to rural traditions and pre mass production industry, and the people who powered these tools with their physical selves. As a hand tool user I am aware of the intimate relationship with the material that the user obtains and indeed needs in order to succeed in their work. Sound, sight, touch, force and a feel for the interaction between material and tool all come into play. I am drawn to the beauty of hand forged steel, and learnt from my grandfather how to use and maintain these simple but efficient objects.”
